original PRR tunnel
This tunnel was part of the original alignment of the "Western Pennsylvania RR" that ran from Blairsville Junction northwest along the winding Conemaugh River to the Allegheny River ( and on to Pittsburgh; it was also the alternate route for the Main Line if an accident occurred ). Credit for these photos goes to STG Boy no4.

Above is the western portal off of the realigned tracks. Below is the 1904 USGS map. Note the local branch going into Avonmore.

This aerial photo shows the original and the new alignments.

These piers are from the original bridge at the eastern portal.

Here is the current bridge. I wonder if it is the original moved down river ???

Arch Bridge to the East
STG Boy no 4 also found an old arch bridge on the other side of the river to the east that led to the bridge then tunnel..
