A few people wonder who we are, how we got into this hobby and why
we do the website.
Let me give you a short version and in the
future we will expand upon it if you are curious.
- two guys meet in High School via the H.S. volleyball team
- they discover they share a unique sense of humor (bad) and
they both work on the newspaper
- they happy-ass ( his Dad's phrase ) around Western PA in a '66
Mustang on 29c gasoline and discover they like old stuff -- signs,
Coke machines, RR signs -- and they begin to collect stuff
together
- some great finds are the Philip Morris midget, Stop - Look-
Listen and sign heaven in West Kittanning
- after collecting for 20 years and driving the old roads of PA,
WV and OH, they find that hidden treasures are pretty much gone;
the old stuff is picked over or over-priced; and new
'collectibles' ? Please...
- now what to feed our hunger for history ? old postcards but
then trying to re-create the same shot today; yes
- next up, get old gas station road maps and follow the US
routes on their original paths
- rails-to-trails rides on bicycle lead to a keen interest in
old Railroad rights-of-way
- the PA Trolley Museum calendars lead to exploration of the
West Penn Railways right-of-way and the myriad of old coal patch
towns
- somewhere along the way, coke ovens become attractive
- and finally, a decision to share the photos and info with
others on the website; it sure beats sitting in a bar all day
drinking !
