Carr's Tunnel, east of Greensburg on the old PRR Mainline

Imagine walking in the woods near your new house in Donohoe PA and noticing what looks like a tunnel in the distance.

As you approach it, you realize it is open !

And the brick facade has obviously been cleaned since it was built in 1868. ( There is no dark smoke mark in the middle top from PRR steam engines.

Here is a look back to 1890.

One problem is that water sits in the former railbed. Note that the ceiling has been refinished.

As this 1902 USGS maps shows, Carr's Tunnel was on the PRR original mainline. Most of the roads shown still exist. The railroad spur to the north is the New Alexandria Branch, serving coal mines and coke ovens.
